Two Fifty, square meal

Two Fifty, square meal

Located right beside our gym in Rathmines, hidden in a back street, Two Fifty Square was pretty quick to attract the hipster/family population of our neighborhood. The reason of this success ? Their coffee, which seems to please all the coffee snobs in Dublin. When a cafe has a full coffee menu, you know they take their brew quite seriously.

I am a snob on many levels, but not about my coffee. I love a good ristretto like they serve in Naples but my morning cup of instant coffee pleases me just as much. I can see you shaking your head in disappointment, but that's how it is. My boyfriend however became a snob of the worst sort in recent months. He is now one of those who will trek to his favoured spots in the morning to get a cup from the new it-coffee stand in town.

On a desperately grey Saturday, we were heading towards town but were obstructed by the rain and found shelter in this lovely little shed - yes, that's late July in Ireland, rain, rain, and more rain. At 2pm, the place was still full of people having brunch, but we managed to get a table for two.

When we ordered, he asked for a cup of Nigerian blend (or something like that) only to be told they had none left. His face dropped, and I just started laughing. He ordered the other brew with a bit of reluctance. I didn't feel like coffee so I got nothing. As for food, I ordered the avocado toast, and he went for the warm chipotle sandwich with soup.

I was very happy with my choice. Nothing utterly exciting but just a good avocado toast topped with a poached egg on sourdough bread and red chili flakes: 6 euros well spent. He liked his sandwich as well as the soup, and the coffee, although not the one he wanted, didn't disappoint.

Will I come back? Probably, this cafe makes for a great casual brunch when I don't feel like cooking. It's nothing revolutionary, but we both enjoyed the place. The roof windows make it nice and bright, and the food and beverages offer is exactly what is trendy at the moment, a good mix of healthy, tasty and Instagram friendly.
